A new facility to store locally grown organic vegetables opened Friday on the Flying Dust First Nation.

The Riverside Market Garden began in 2009 with two acres and has since expanded to 30 acres and 18 employees.

Manager-in-training Gladys Cardinal says only a handful of people were involved in the project at the beginning but the Cree8 Worker Co-operative is now a profitable business.

“When we initially started it was for the community and, well it still is, but we’ve ventured out to the business aspect of it and we still give out care packages to the elders and to the single people, disabled people and now that we have expanded, we saw the marketing aspect of it,” she says.

Funding for the storage facility comes from the federal government and the Flying Dust First Nation.
