When the Prime Minister visits the La Ronge area later today, he will quite likely hear the sounds of an Indigenous drumming circle.

It is part of a protest timed to coincide with Stephen Harper’s first visit to northern Saskatchewan as Prime Minister.

Harper will be in Air Ronge to make an announcement at the site of the new Northlands College mining campus.

While protest organizer Kirstin Scanson takes issue with the Harper government on a number of topics — she really doesn’t like the reason why the Prime Minister is making the trip.

“As I understand it, the Prime Minister is here to represent economic interests of the Canadian state — and he’s here to celebrate the co-optation of our educational institutions by uranium mining corporations.  So, we’ll be there.  We’ll be right in the vicinity of the Montreal River bridge.”

The demonstration is being called “Stephen Harper Is Not Welcome On Treaty 6 Territory” — and Scanson is promising it will be peaceful.
