Saskatchewan Environment is changing the rules when it comes to who can accompany Aboriginal fishers.

The ministry says any non-Aboriginal person fishing with a status Indian or Métis person exercising their right to sustenance fishing must possess a licence.

Environment spokesman Chris Dunn says the same sort of provision is contained in the Provincial Wildlife Act and this change will make it easier for conservation officers to enforce the rules.

“Certainly, our officers are running into those situations where it gets really difficult to tell whose fish are whose and that sort of thing,” he says.

Immediate family members of status Indians or Métis peoples are allowed to assist with fishing for food but if they don’t have sustenance fishing rights themselves; they cannot fish without a licence.
