The chief of the Key First Nation has pleaded guilty to one count of drug trafficking.

Sixty-one-year-old Clarence Papequash entered the guilty plea Thursday on the first day of his trial.

Sentencing is scheduled for July 4 in Regina.

Papequash is among 20 people charged in 2011 as part of an alleged prescription drug ring which included the sale of narcotics like morphine.

The guilty plea to an indictable offense means Papequash will likely be removed from office.

In February 2011, band councillor Gerald Papequash was sentenced to 16 months in jail after pleading guilty to several drug-related charges.
