Residents of Estevan are going to the polls today to elect a new city councilor and vote on a proposed casino.

The Little Pine First Nation wants to build the $30 million facility in the city.

The casino question is non-binding but Mayor Roy Ludwig says it will give him an indication on whether the proposal should be pursued.

Earlier this month, Little Pine Chief Wayne Semaganis told MBC News if residents vote against the idea, he will respect their wishes and move on.

Little Pine also wants to build a casino in Lloydminster.

The First Nation wants to operate the facilities on its own, outside the jurisdiction of the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority.

Such a move would require special approval by the province.
