Enbridge is seeking regulatory approval for an upgrade of a pipeline that runs partially through Saskatchewan.
The company’s Line 3 pipeline runs from Hardisty, Alberta through to Manitoba.
It crosses through the Regina area and the Carlyle district.
Company spokesman Graham White says they want to begin shipping 760,000 barrels of oil a day through the line.
It’s something the line was already capable of doing but he explains they cut back the volume a few years ago due to safety reasons:
“We made that decision in 2010 and now if we can put in another line, or a substitute line essentially, then we can bring that capacity back up to its original rated level (of 760,000).”
He says the work is intended to enhance safety but the company will be ready for any problems like spills:
“We have an outstanding emergency response plan in place to ensure that if something does occur we’re able to respond to it quickly and effectively and to clean it up entirely.”
He adds stakeholders will be informed every step of the way and he says many jobs should be created through the $7 Billion project.
