Major League pitcher Andrew Albers was in Saskatoon Monday.

The Minnesota Twins pitcher, who hails from North Battleford, was in the Bridge City as part of a special baseball camp for students at Tommy Douglas Collegiate.

The 28-year-old Albers knows all about the challenges of being from Saskatchewan and making it to the big leagues and says kids just need to stick with the sport if they want to take it to a higher level.

“It’s one of those things that you got to continue to grind it out,” he says. “You hear that term all the time and what’s it mean? Well, you got to continue to work because you might not get that chance right off the bat.”

Albers is in the province as part of Cameco Corporation’s Dream and Believe camp and will also be making stops in North Battleford, Regina and Prince Albert.

The uranium mining company is also donating 30 sets of baseball equipment to each of the schools the camp stops at.

The North Battleford pitcher is the first player from Saskatchewan to make it to the big leagues in 21 years and one of only eight players from the province to ever play professional baseball.
