The mayor of La Ronge says the provincial government will be taking action this week to help workers being laid off at northern gold operations.

About 120 workers from the area are being affected as Golden Band Resources closes its northern facilities, including the Roy Lloyd Mine and Jolu Mill.

Mayor Thomas Sierzyicki says the province’s rapid response team was in La Ronge on Friday and it’s strategy will be different than how it handled the recent layoffs in the potash industry:

“So, of course, it’s a little bit different situation where everyone’s not localized.  But they are going to be doing outreach through Can-Sask (Career and Employment Services), through the federal government, through agencies that work in the communities.  So it’s going to be a little bit different of a mechanism, but they’re still going to be engaging on the community level.”

Sierzycki says information packages for laid-off workers will be mailed out this week, and they will also be available at the La Ronge town office and on the town’s website.
