According to an official with the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation, this past year has been a pretty good one for Saskatchewan commercial fishers.

When compared to the last fiscal year, payments to fishers rose from roughly $2.8 million to $3.2 million.

FFMC director of field operations Dave Bergunder says prices were up for a number of different species.

“Overall, deliveries are up in the previous fiscal year and dollars of income to fishers are up, as well,” he says.

Bergunder adds the U.S. continues to be the strongest export market for a number of different species, including pickerel, whitefish, pike, and mullet.

Saskatchewan fishers delivered roughly 1.8 million kilograms of fish.

FFMC numbers show initial payments for whitefish, walleye and tullibee were all up.

The organization gave a report at the Saskatchewan Cooperative Fisheries Ltd. annual general meeting in Prince Albert last weekend.
