The Transportation Safety Board has released its findings into a fatal crash that happened in central Saskatchewan last year.

The two planes collided in mid-air near St. Brieux on May 12, 2012.

One of the planes was traveling from Alberta to St. Brieux while the other was headed from Regina to La Ronge.

Five people died in the crash.

Ross Peden is an investigator with the Transportation Safety Board who worked on the crash.

He says the two pilots obviously didn’t see one another until it was too late and neither plane was equipped with on-board radar.

“They don’t have radar but they had what’s known as passive collision avoidance systems, but we were unable to determine if they were in use at the time,” he says.

Peden adds the relative position of the two planes caused their views to be obscured from one another.

He says crashes like this are rare.
