The Green Party is calling on Premier Brad Wall to take over the Northern Affairs file.

Victor Lau says he feels the move would make sense on a number of fronts.

One, he says the province is benefiting economically from several development projects in the north but local residents want to be reassured that they’re part of that boom.

And two, Lau says historically premiers have devoted their energies to files that interested them.

“I cite one example of Premier (Tommy) Douglas taking on the healthcare file because he felt it was very close to his heart but also a very important file and he wanted specific, personal attention on it,” he says.

Lau adds there is currently no MLA in cabinet from the northern part of the province, which he finds surprising.

The Green Party leader was recently in La Ronge to talk to local residents.

He says infrastructure spending and the desire to keep more dollars within the local economy are some of the key issues that were raised.
