An exploration company says it’s found kimberlite east of La Ronge.

North Arrow Minerals has a minority stake in the Pikoo Diamond Project.

Located 140 kilometres away from the community, workers recently hit some kimberlite while drilling.

CEO Ken Armstrong says that’s the type of rock that can hold diamonds — something that isn’t typically associated with northern Saskatchewan:

“It does represent a new locality for kimberlite to be known to occur in Saskatchewan and in Canada.  So, it’s kind of exciting from that perspective.”

While Armstrong says the results are encouraging, he’s not getting overly excited:

“We haven’t found any diamonds. It’s sort of just the next stage. So what we’ve done here is take the project from some interesting indications that there could be kimberlite on the property — and now with this first drill hole from the program we’re doing, we have found some kimberlite which proves that the right rock type is there.”

The company is scheduled to keep exploring till the end of July.
