There’s been another drop in the number of wild-rice producers signing onto the province’s crop insurance program.

President Shawn Jaques says just 58 growers signed up for coverage this spring.

That’s down from 63 last year.

Despite the drop, Jaques says he’s confident in the viability of the program moving forward.

“I’m pleased with the numbers that we have,” he says. “I think we have a strong program for producers, the coverage has gone up. It will provide that protection in the event of a weather disaster.”

He says coverage from the program is increasing from 70 cents to 85 cents per pound.
