A new hydroelectric power plant in the province’s north and a doubling of the main power line from Sandy Bay to Key Lake are highlighted in SaskPower’s annual report which was tabled in the legislature today.

The report shows the corporation recorded a profit of $147 million over the last year.  All of that money will be going back to the company to help finance a ten-year, $10-billion rebuild program.

SaskPower president Robert Watson says while most of the expansion has been in southern and central Saskatchewan, the needs of the north are not being forgotten:

“We’re also doubling the size of the I1K — the power line that goes from Sandy Bay to Key Lake — in order to stabilize the whole northern grid.”

Another major development for the north is a proposed power plant on the Fond du Lac River. Watson says the corporation is now dealing directly with the Black Lake First Nation to complete the deal, which would see the First Nation own 30% of the plant. It would have the capacity to power about 42,000 homes. This is the first project of its kind for the corporation.
