One of the largest bands in the province will elect a new chief today.
The Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation has been led over the last six years by outgoing chief Darrell McCallum, who has opted not to seek re-election.
Former chief Harold Linklater and long-time band councillor Peter A. Beatty are the candidates in the running to replace him.
Polling stations are open today in seven communities throughout northeast Saskatchewan. Advance polls were held in a total of nine communities.
The band has over 10,000 members — and roughly 5,800 eligible voters.
The winners in today’s chief and council elections will serve a two-year term in office.
