Some recent statements by Saskatchewan’s premier aren’t sitting well with an Aboriginal leader.

Bryan Lee heads up Fish Lake Metis Local 108.

He says he thinks Brad Wall made a mistake when he recently publicly stated that the best “program” for Aboriginal northerners is Cameco.

The comments drew fire from different groups, but the premier defended his statements in a letter to the editor of the Prince Albert Daily Herald yesterday.

Lee say those comments made it sound like Wall is on Cameco’s side:

“When he makes a statement like that, he is absolutely publicly in support of anything that Cameco does — and we don’t agree with that.”

The Metis leader says it’s dangerous,  because the provincial government is the body that regulates the duty to consult process in Saskatchewan:

“He’s interfering with the process laid down by the Supreme Court of Canada.  I don’t think he really understands the process.”

Lee doesn’t think the premier needs to apologize for his remarks, but he believes the premier should study the Supreme Court’s ruling on the duty to consult issue.

Wall has not been available for comment.
