The province is mourning the loss of an FSIN senator.
Aubrey Goforth, a former chief of the Peepeekisis First Nation and long-time advocate of treaty and inherent rights, passed away on Monday.
The FSIN says he was surrounded by family and friends and went peacefully.
Roland Crowe served with Goforth for many years on the FSIN Senate.
Crowe says he’ll always be grateful for Goforth’s passion and conviction when it came to treaty rights and his presence will be dearly missed:
“One of the strongest fighters for the treaties that our forefathers signed. He’ll certainly be sadly missed in the Senate and many other places. Our sincere condolences to the family and the community. It’s a loss for us. Very, very sad.”
The FSIN says Goforth was a firm believer that education was the key to improving First Nations lives.
He also served as a member of the Indian Justice Commission and as a board member for the First Nations Trust.
