A chief and band council are being elected today on the Mosquito-Grizzly Bear’s Head-Lean Man First Nation near the Battlefords.
There are five men in the running for chief and more than 30 people are running for council.
The election was called after vote-buying and other corrupt practices during the last election just over a year ago.
The chief and a band councillor were ousted as a result.
One of those running for chief is Clarence Stone.
He admitted to stealing nearly $23,000 from the band’s Treaty Land Entitlement fund last summer and was sentenced to a one-year conditional sentence.
