Nursing graduates from the University of Regina now have a chance to have their Saskatchewan Student Loans forgiven.

The provincial government has announced a new program to pay off school debt for graduates who work in rural or remote areas.

University President Dr. Vianne Timmons says the new program will forgive up to $4,000 a year for five years.

“Up to $20,000 for nurses and nurse practitioners who chose to work in under-served rural and remote communities in Saskatchewan, so this is a great opportunity very specifically for communities under 10,000.”

Timmons says the program should be an incentive for nursing graduates from the north who would like to work in or near their home communities.

The program is available to registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses, licenced practical nurses and nurse practitioner graduates from the U of R.
