The chief of the Red Earth First Nation says he’s hoping the spring thaw is a lengthy one.

Ian McKay has been told the potential for flooding on his reserve is above normal.

The Water Security Agency plans to meet with the community in the coming days to assess the situation.

The chief says there is no sign of any floodwaters yet, but residents are concerned:

“We have members wondering if we’re going to be forced to evacuate again this year, which is understandable.”

He adds floods have occurred intermittently on the First Nation over the past six years.

McKay says there is a lot of snow on the reserve right now, and the melt hasn’t really started.
