The national president of Habitat for Humanity says Saskatchewan is an example to the rest of Canada.

Kevin Marshman applauds the province for its decision to double funding to Habitat from $1 million to $2 million.

That will allow the construction of 40 new homes for low-income families in Saskatchewan over the next year.

Marshman says despite the boom, the need for affordable housing is growing:

“It is a sad state of affairs that home ownership is farther away for many families than it was 20 or 30 years ago. The good news is the partnerships we are building with individual givers, with corporations, with governments are helping us solve that issue.”

Social Services Minister June Draude says the success of the program reflects the commitment of sponsors, volunteers and the province.

Draude says the results are very gratifying:

“When I have a chance to meet with children and their families, and see what a difference it makes in their lives, you have to go to bed knowing that life is good, not only for the government, but for the people.”

The announcement was made Tuesday morning at the Saskatchewan Legislature.
