Métis jigging, jingle dress and hoop dancing are just some of the activities young girls in Saskatoon are learning about today.
The all-day event is taking place at the White Buffalo Youth Lodge on 20th Street and is open to girls between the ages of 10 and 15.
Lynne Lacroix with the City of Saskatoon says the event provides local girls the opportunity to learn about traditional forms of dance while staying active at the same time.
“It’s important, primarily around encouraging youth to be active and promoting a healthy lifestyle,” she says. “And, giving youth a variety of activities to choose from so if they find something they like, they are more likely to take it up and be involved for a longer period of time.”
An elder is also on hand to help the girls explore traditional teachings.
The event is open to Indigenous and non-Indigenous girls.
