Six Saskatchewan organizations have been chosen among Canada’s top diversity employers.

The list is compiled by Mediacorp Canada and the results are published in the Globe and Mail newspaper.

It is an annual competition and Cameco, Information Services Corporation, the City of Saskatoon, SGI, SaskPower and SaskTel have all made the cut.

This is the third year in a row SaskTel has made the list and media relations manager Tara Tibeau says this is a great honour.

“We know from trends that our Aboriginal population continues to grow,” she says. “As well as young people specifically, they have a high demographic of young people – that’s their fastest growing demographic – so we know there is a significant future and our base is Saskatchewan so we are very cognizant of that.”

Tibeau says contrary to what some people may think, hiring standards are not lowered to accommodate targeted groups.

She says an extra effort is made to hire within these groups but a person does not get the job unless they have the skills required to fill it.

This is the fourth year in a row Cameco has been chosen as one of the country’s top diversity employers.

Cameco vice-president of human resources Kaylynn Schroeder says the company is committed to diversity hiring at all levels.

“I believe that out diversity program, with our focus on Aboriginals, why it’s so strong is we really believe in that and we believe in that from our board representation to our employee representation,” she says.

The diversity initiatives are aimed at five main groups – persons with disabilities, Aboriginals, gays and lesbians, transsexual and bisexual people.
