A Liberal MP says Canada and provinces like Saskatchewan should look at resource revenue sharing with First Nations.

Liberal Aboriginal Affairs critic Carolyn Bennett was in Saskatoon on Friday to hold a meeting with party supporters.

The Toronto MP says the original intent of the treaties was that resources would be shared fairly with First Nations and the option must now be explored.

“It think that it has to be on the table at First Ministers meetings, there has to be leadership from the feds on this, there’s no question,” she says. “What’s in one party’s platform in one election has nothing to do with what the original understanding of the treaties meant and it was that the resources should be shared fairly.”

Some provincial premiers, including Saskatchewan’s Brad Wall, have said resource revenue sharing with First Nations is absolutely not on the table.

The event, called “Eradicate The Ignorance,” was hosted by the Aboriginal Peoples’ Commission of the Liberal Party.
