It is unclear how long a two-year-old First Nations boy was left unattended in foster care before he died more than two years ago.
Eunice Wudrich is charged with criminal negligence causing death after Evander Lee Daniels was found face down in a partially filled bathtub in her Aberdeen home on June 8, 2010.
Daniels was a member of the Sturgeon Lake First Nation.
Court heard Wudrich, who was caring for six children at the time including five foster children all under the age of five, left Daniels unattended in the family bathroom while tending to another child.
Wudrich’s husband Dennis testified when another child told him the water was running in the bathroom he entered the room to find the toddler face down in the bathtub.
Court also heard Dennis Wudrich originally told police he arrived home from work on the day in question around 4 p.m. but later changed this to about 4:50 p.m.
A 911 call from the Wudrich home was received around 5:05 p.m.
The trial began yesterday at Court of Queen’s Bench in Saskatoon.
