A Standing Buffalo First Nation band councillor is going to court to try to force an immediate election on the reserve.

Stella Isnana is behind a move to have the chief and council of the band, located northeast of Regina, kicked out of office.

She says the main issue at hand is one of extravagant spending.

Isnana adds the band’s senate has voted to impeach the chief and council but he refuses to recognize the senate’s authority.

She says pursuing legal action may take time.

“I have to get a lawyer and get an injunction on them so that’s going to take time,” she says. “Because the lawyer that’s working with the band has stepped in and is supporting them.”

Chief Roger Redman says spending for travel and meetings has been cut substantially and more cuts are planned.

He adds the band has also passed a recent federal audit.

Redman says he is well within his rights to stay in office and is confident in the legal advice he is getting from his lawyer.
