The mayor of Prince Albert is urging local residents to start phoning local MLAs in an effort to get a second bridge constructed in the city.

Greg Dionne says he’s disappointed by a government-commissioned report which indicates a second bridge in the city isn’t needed right now.

He believes political will is the only thing holding back the project.

However, Minister of Highways and Infrastructure Don McMorris says there are simply a large number of other pressing infrastructure concerns in the province and the Diefenbaker Bridge can service the city for many more years.

“We want to make sure the dollars we put out for infrastructure are needed at this time,” he says. “We know now the Diefenbaker Bridge has a capacity up until probably 2040.”

The opposition NDP disagrees.

It says the city needs infrastructure help and points out a large number of potentially-dangerous truck loads cross the bridge regularly.
