An Ontario First Nations Grand Council is voicing concern that the recent heightened attention surrounding the Idle No More rallies may lead to some negative backlash against its students.
The Anishinabek Nation sent out a press release on Thursday urging schools within its jurisdiction to ensure its students are protected from any negative repercussions as a result of the current national debate on First Nations issues.
Murray Maracle, the director of education for the grand council, says they have received a number of calls from concerned parents.
“Issues from the Aboriginal sector that are coming forward through Idle No More, I think that is on the minds of everyone and unfortunately there are differences on each side and sometimes those are brought forward and not always in a good way.”
The Anishinabek Nation represents 39 First Nations in a large area across Ontario ranging from Thunder Bay in the north to Sarnia in the south.
