One of the Saskatoon police’s newest recruits says the key to improving relations between police and Aboriginal people is a continued focus on community policing.
Katelynn Keyes was one of 19 officers sworn into the Saskatoon Police Service yesterday.
Keyes, who is of Métis descent, says police need to continue to focus on policing at the local level as a means of building bridges with Aboriginal people.
Keyes served in a number of civilian roles with the RCMP before joining the Saskatoon police.
Her father Jeff Keyes is a retired RCMP sergeant who served in communities all over Saskatchewan.
Thirteen constables, six special constables and three K-9 dogs were sworn in at the induction ceremony at Teachers’ Credit Union Place in Saskatoon.
