Liberal MP Ralph Goodale says he thinks the Governor General could play a meaningful role in a meeting between the Prime Minister and First Nations.

Chief Theresa Spence and other chiefs have called for David Johnston to attend a future meeting between Stephen Harper and First Nations.

They say he represents the authority of the Crown which originally signed the treaties with Canada’s Indigenous peoples.

Goodale says he thinks Johnston’s presence could prove useful but at last word Johnston says he doesn’t plan to attend any future meetings.

Goodale is also welcoming the 13-point declaration Chief Spence helped create that’s designed to protect Indigenous rights.

The Regina MP says it’s tough to say if the decision by Chief Spence to end her hunger strike will have any effect on the Idle No More campaign.

He says Spence made great progress with her effort but the two causes are somewhat different.

Goodale says he’s been impressed with how effective the Idle No More movement has been in garnering public support.

More rallies and marches are scheduled to take place on Monday In Saskatchewan and other provinces.
