Commercial fishers in northern Saskatchewan are still waiting for an answer on whether or not the provincial government will fund their annual meeting.

Every spring, the Saskatchewan Cooperative Fisheries Limited holds a gathering in Prince Albert where resolutions are tabled and executive board members are elected.

Treasurer Marie Hildebrandt says the cooperative usually receives $50,000 from the provincial government for the meeting but they haven’t heard yet whether the money is coming or not this year.

She says the meeting is a vital way of keeping all the fishers on the same page.

“Some have computers and some don’t,” she says. “We send out letters but this way they can ask questions and know everything that is going on.”

Chris Dunn is the manager of the fisheries unit for Saskatchewan Environment.

He says the decision on funding isn’t usually made until late March and they’re just waiting to receive the application.

He adds the decision will likely be made close to the release of this year’s budget.
