The Chief of the Attiwapiskat First Nation will not be attending a meeting on Friday between the Prime Minister and First Nations leaders.

In a release, Chief Theresa Spence says she made the decision after hearing Canadian Governor General David Johnston will not be attending the gathering.

Chief Spence says she has asked Queen Elizabeth to order Johnston, who is her official representative in Canada, to attend the meeting.

She explains it is the treaties, which were made under the Royal Proclamation of 1763, that allowed for settlement in her territory.

Chief Spence adds First Nations leaders want treaty-implementation made in the spirit and intent of bringing honour to the Crown.

She argues Canada is not acting in good faith and has once again set the tone for poor relations by releasing an audit of her band through the Department of Aboriginal Affairs just days before Friday’s meeting.

This audit states there is a lack of documentation to explain how millions of federal dollars earmarked for the band were spent.

Chief Spence says the release of the audit is an effort by the government to distract attention away from the real issues and discredit her.
