Eight more First Nations in the province are getting high-speed internet.

SaskTel announced today that 4G coverage is being expanded to two communities on the Onion Lake reserve along with Piapot, Keeseekoose, Little Pine, Witchekan Lake, Key, and Mosquito First Nations.

SaskTel spokeswoman Tara Tibeau says customers in the affected communities will notice a big improvement over the existing service.

“The CDMA network would have slower speeds, it wouldn’t be capable of doing simultaneous downloading and calling,” she says.  “The download speeds for instance, with mobile browsing, is 21 megabytes per-second, which is 4.5 times faster than existing CDMA speeds.”

The service expansion is part of a $17 million announcement made back in 2010.

It covers 28 different communities.
