The head of YWCA Canada says she’s not sure why an inquiry into the plight of missing and murdered aboriginal women hasn’t happened already.

Paulette Senior is calling on the Federal government to fulfill a promise she says it made in June of 2011 to address violence against women and girls.

She says surviving violence shouldn’t be a life sentence.

Her group is currently trying to put more focus on the dangerous situations facing many young, aboriginal women:

“Well it’s rather puzzling to me because I don’t know any other sort of situation or circumstance where you could have hundreds of women murdered or missing for so long — without there being some sort of national response to that in the form of an inquiry.”

The YWCA has joined with the Elizabeth Fry Society and the Native Women’s Association for this year’s installment of the “Rose Campaign”.

It tries to help girls and women get off the streets and away from violent situations.
