The Chief of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation is trying to clear the air about a recent drug-charge against him.

In June of this year Darrell McCallum was charged with possessing marijuana not exceeding thirty grams.

He completed mediation and as a result the Crown decided to withdraw the charge.

The chief plans to hold community meetings in the coming days with the band’s membership where he says he will discuss the issue:

“On November 20th, 2012, I met with the council of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation and elder representation from the communities.  The discussion centered on the charge of possession of a controlled substance that I had faced.  I take full responsibility for my action in this regard and I am going to be hosting community meetings over the next week for the sole purpose of addressing this matter.”

The chief refused to take any questions.

His statement also comes on the same day another councilor with the band is in an Alberta court-room on a charge of his own.

Darwin Morin is accused of assault and three counts of breaching an undertaking.

The incident is alleged to have happened at a casino near Edmonton.

Morin is due back in court on February.
