Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Corrections says it has addressed some concerns raised by a prisoner at the women’s jail in Prince Albert.

This morning, a letter was published in a Prince Albert newspaper alleging mistreatment at the Pine Grove Correctional Centre.

Among other things, the prisoner, Lynn Vandale, said inmates were being punished at times for speaking their minds and denied immediate access to showers, clean clothing, certain medicines and food.

Ministry spokesperson Judy Orthner says the concerns were first raised two weeks ago and the correctional centre has moved to address them:

“In this particular case, we did look into the inmate’s concerns — and any concerns that she had, related to how she had been treated, were addressed by senior staff at the correctional centre.”

Orthner says she is unable to get into specific details due to privacy concerns.
