A candidate for chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations says allegations against him have been proven to be groundless.

Thunderchild First Nation Chief Delbert Wapass says he has been cleared by the FSIN’s Credentials Committee, which looked into the allegations circulated in a recent news release.

Wapass says he is suspicious about the timing of the rumours, with the FSIN election scheduled for Thursday:

“I find it very suspect, very suspicious, this came out at the 11th hour — a couple of days before the vote.  And I’m just glad that the truth prevailed.”

The release suggested a petition has been circulating to have Wapass removed as chief for alleged impropieties.

Wapass’ 2010 election as chief was contested at least once, but a reserve tribunal ruled he was legitimately elected.
