Saskatchewan’s Aboriginal population is not quite as welcoming to immigrants as the general population.

That finding comes from an extensive research project conducted by the University of Saskatchewan.

“Taking the Pulse of Saskatchewan” involved telephone surveys with 1,750 residents over a two-week period in March.  The results are being released over the next 10 days.

On the subject of immigration, 92% of immigrants surveyed said Saskatchewan is a welcoming place.

In 2010, Saskatchewan took in about 7,500 immigrants.  Residents were asked whether the province is bringing in too many.

Twenty-eight per cent said it was too high, 13% said it was too low, while the rest said it was about right.  However, response among the Aboriginal community showed 57% felt it was too high.

Next week, the survey looks at moral issues, crime and safety, and health and well-being.
