Today is the first-ever national day of action to end violence against and among Indigenous peoples in Canada.

Native Women’s Association of Canada President Michele Audette says the day is intended to support Aboriginal families who have lost loved ones to violence.

Audette says NWAC is asking people to reflect on their own health and to think of how they can promote non-violence in our society.

The association is also encouraging citizens to sign a petition or send a postcard to ask the federal government to call a national inquiry into missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls — a call that is being echoed by the Assembly of First Nations.

NWAC also suggests people ask their local leaders to support the push for a national inquiry.
