The chief electoral officer for the Metis Nation – Saskatchewan says he is preparing to sort through ballots.

Last week’s MN-S election resulted in a close finish in the race for provincial secretary.

May Henderson unofficially defeated Tammy Mah by a vote count of 866 to 815.

Ian Craven notes those results are unofficial, so more scrutiny is needed:

“We’re just going through the process now of making those results official.  The night of the election, they were phoned in — and so now we’re going through the paperwork to validate those results.”

Craven says if the margin of victory is still less than 2% after he and his staff have gone through the ballots, a judge will have to be brought in to witness another recount:

“I make an application to the court in Saskatchewan to do that process.  I understand from back in 2007 there was also one — and it was about a month down the road.”

Craven says the judicial recount itself could take as long as a day.
