A bit of Metis history was unveiled yesterday at Batoche.

About 100 people took part in a mass at the historic St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church before spilling outside where a ceremony was held in honour of a new monument at the site.

A memorial bench and stepping stone, dedicated to the memory of Mary and Walter Fiddler, was placed directly in front of the church.

Ray Fiddler is the son of the late couple, and says the church has always had a special significance for his family.

He notes his parents were married in the church, and were able to celebrate their 60th anniversary in it, as well.

The work was spearheaded by the group “Friends of Batoche”.

Eleven more benches will be set up around the site to give people a chance to rest during visits to the park.
