A director with the Gabriel Dumont Institute is applauding an announcement by the province yesterday that it is putting $200,000 into Metis education.

Karen Schmon says the Metis population is growing by the fastest margin, yet many Metis residents lack the funding to get into college or university:

“This will go a long way to meeting the educational needs of Metis people and of seeing that they get the education, skills and training that they need to pursue their life’s goals.”

She adds many Metis people are willing to stay in the province to work, and can do so without losing their cultural identity.

Schmon says the announcement comes at a welcome time because of the disproportionate lack of success for Aboriginal students in the school system.

The province says some of the money will go towards increasing high school and post-secondary completion rates.
