A Moosomin First Nation student cracked the top 20 in the Miss Teen Canada-World pageant on the weekend.

By doing that, 16-year-old Nikita Kahpeaysewat qualified to compete internationally, according to her mom, Chuckie Nicotine.

But Nicotine says they won’t be doing that because it’s just too expensive, time-consuming and exhausting.

She adds Nikita is resting after a very busy week:

“Her mornings started at 5:00 a.m., sometimes 4:00 a.m.  They would go to bed at 1 a.m., sometimes 2:00 a.m. — so they were getting by with three or four hours of sleep.”

But Nicotine says the time she spent in Toronto did give Nikita an idea of what she wants to do with her life after she graduates — teach music.

Another Aboriginal youth from Saskatchewan, 15-year-old Natahni Paquachan of Wadena, also competed.  But Nicotine says, unfortunately, she didn’t make the top 20.

A Montreal teen won the pageant.
