A unique rental housing development was officially opened today on the Whitecap Dakota First Nation.
Buffalo Berry Place is a 12-unit facility that will accommodate people employed on the reserve.
The province, through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, contributed $1.7 million toward the $2.4-million total cost.
The provincially-supported, on-reserve housing project is believed to be the first of its kind in Saskatchewan.
Chief Darcy Bear says there are about 670 employees at Whitecap, and about 500 of them commute to the reserve every day.
The apartment building contains one- and two-bedroom units for families, singles and couples.
One unit is also fully wheelchair accessible.
