Sixteen youth from the Clearwater River Dene Nation are preparing for a major trek through an Alberta river system.

Chief Roy Cheecham says they are taking the kids from Rocky Mountain House up to Edmonton.

Ten canoes and a safety boat will be used to make the 320-km trek.

Cheecham says they do a canoe trip every year, but this is the first time they have tried this river system.

He also says since no alcohol or drugs are permitted on this trip, he hopes this leads to them becoming better and independent young people.

The youth range in age from 13 to 16.

Six chaperones will also be on hand for the trip.

The entire length of the trip is 10 days, and Cheecham says six or seven of those will be spent in the water.
