Cameco has released its 2012 Sustainable Development Report.

The report measures the uranium producer’s performance on 31 Global Reporting Initiative indicators.

President and CEO Tim Gitzel says the report “shows how Cameco is meeting society’s increased expectations for environmentally and socially responsible business practices”.

Among other findings, Cameco says the reports shows the company benefits people in local communities through workforce and business development programs, and community investment.

The company also says it demonstrates that Cameco is reducing its environmental footprint through process improvements and reclamation projects — as well as providing safe, healthy, and rewarding workplaces.

Cameco says the report also highlights how the company is ensuring long-term financial stability through investments in technical innovation and exploration.

Company spokesman Gary Merasty says officials are pleased with advances that have been made.

Merasty says the information will be compared to another report completed in two years.

He say the information can be useful to several groups of people — including communities, the media, investors, customers, regulators, government and employees.

Merasty says Cameco will continue to work on targeted areas as the company heads into future projects around the world.
