A traditional Denesuline assembly is underway this week in northwest Saskatchewan.

The week-long event is being attended by a few dozen people who are discussing a number of issues.

Organizer Roger Deranger says anyone is welcome to attend the meeting, which is being held near a river north of La Loche.

He adds the environment is one of the main issues up for discussion:

“Because of the oil sands in the Fort McMurray area the people here are concerned.  They don’t want the same thing to happen.”

He adds the development of a Dene national government is another main topic.
