A Regina lawyer expects thousands of victims to come forward in a class action lawsuit he recently launched against the Saskatchewan government.

Tony Merchant is suing on behalf of children who were abused while in foster care.

The statement of claim was filed in court on Friday.

Merchant says most of the victims were young Aboriginal girls.

He says the Department of Social Services turned a blind eye to what was happening.

Merchant is confident the case will succeed:

“I’m very confident about this theory of the way we will proceed across Canada — and people should be contacting us and signing up with us on our website and calling, because we think we are going to recover and I’m very confident of a positive outcome.”

Because the case is now before the courts, the Ministry of Social Services will not be responding.
