The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations is preparing to hand out medals to commemorate First Nations students who graduate this spring.

The honours are intended to remind graduates that education is a treaty right and shouldn’t be taken for granted.

FSIN Vice-Chief Simon Bird says he comes from an educational background, and he worries not enough students are exercising their right to an education:

“There is a lot of students that are not thinking about utilizing that opportunity, utilizing that tool that we have.”

At this point, Bird estimates just under 600 of the medals will be handed out.
