A 19-year-old woman from the Whitebear First Nation heads to Albuquerque, New Mexico today to be part of Miss Indian World.

The five-day pageant is one of the many events held along with the Gathering of Nations Pow Wow, the largest in the world.

Rosalind Shepherd, a student at the First Nations University of Canada in Regina, says she has been involved in pow wows since she could crawl.

Shepherd says she has been busy preparing and is looking forward to meeting the other contestants from diverse tribal backgrounds.

The pageant has been running since 1983.
